I haven't been to B&N in years, but there was a brief period where I was a regular at a location that had a café that was great for studying.
I actually even made some incidental purchases there because I needed something that they happened to sell, or saw a book that seemed interesting.
One way to improve the experience could be to diversify their offerings while maybe using the café experience to draw in foot traffic. Amazon has been successful at becoming an online one-stop-shop where one could purchase a wide variety of items (including books, their initial niche), but B&N is still very much perceived as a bookstore, and not much more than that.
Thanks for sharing Hervey. Providing a quiet and comfortable place for actuaries and students to study for B&N. They are competing against traditional Starbucks locations and other such places for this activity, so I'd love to see B&N think about what more they could do to lure in this audience, who could in turn take study breaks and peruse the books and music section to help drive shopping and revenue. I'd argue that the B&N Cafe experience today is no better than the alternatives I mentioned and possibly worse. For instance, the restrooms are generally way in the back of the store while the cafes are generally in the front.
